I was watching CSI Miami tonight and one of the characters involved in the case was a government agent who worked for the 'Census Bureau'. Sort of odd they'd be involved in serious undercover work. Then it hit me that my dad also worked for the Census Bureau and had the same GS ranking and clearance as the guy on TV.

So I tied some stuff together.

When I was a kid I remember my father having a red phone next to his bed with a list of names he was to call if that phone ever rang. Then our entire family was to get out of town as fast as we could and we had documents to get us through any check points or onto any plane, with the ability to bump other passengers off. It was kind of weird knowing that your childhood friends would be vaporized and I would be several hundred feet below ground sitting things out.

The place we were going to was a center that was setup to monitor certain 'activities' in the states in case of a nuclear war. Or so the story goes that my father told us. All in all a very high tech center built to withstand a nuclear hit. As the story went, it was under a regular office building that in theory didn't have a level that deep under it. But if you had a certain elevator key....... way down you went.

After he 'retired' I got a call from dad telling me that he was Bahrain during the Iran-Iraq war. When I asked him what he was doing there he told me he and a friend were just using up some frequent flier miles. The next day I read in the paper that the US had just the day before signed a deal to sell sophisticated fighter aircraft to Bahrain.

So, next time that friendly census taker knocks on your door, tell them what they need to know, or they might kill you.

Yeah, I remember you telling us about the red phone back in my "Do You Live Near a Military Base" thread.

I think about you every time I see one of those in a movie now.

    I remember asking my dad,

"Who the hell goes to Bahrain to use up 'frequent flier' miles?"

    All he said was,

"Why not? They have beautiful beaches"
